At this point, you know what a QR code is. A type of barcode in two dimensions. You have more information in wikipedia. These are the parts of a QR code.
A QR code is to be read with a smartphone. There are free applications that you can download in your phone. You have to search for QR reader or QR scanner. Then install th app in your phone. The app works like a camera, bring the phone to the code and the app will take a picture that will send you to a internet site. But the scanner don't serve to create the code.
To create the code you need a program in your computer. But you don't need to download any program, there are free sites in internet where you can create one. The code is very easy to create. You have to introduce the url in the program and the code will be generated automatically.
Remember that a QR always is linked to a url so what you want to announce with a QR, must be in internet. Make sure you put the information in a stable site. In some blogs that accept links, the url is dynamic. That means that every time you enter the site, the url changes and the QR will lead to a non serve site. A QR code brings information into your phone.
This is an example of a QR use. A program for a concert of two of my students. I made the program, put it into a site and then created the QR code. The posters were printed with the QR code so every person in the audience with a smartphone could scan the code and have the program in their phone. So you can now download a QR reader, scan the image and access the program of the concert (is in Spanish and English).
Another example. If you visit my facebook profile, you'll see I have a QR instead of a picture from many months. Scanning the QR, you'll visit my web page from your phone.
I hope this information be useful and encourage you to explore QR codes.
I'd like bring here today the app's the software for smartphones. If you use a smartphone and app's you'll know the potential. Exist all kind of app's, for learning languages, music, for business, for accounting... Maybe you have a lot of them in your phone.
Well, I propose use some of free software to build our own app. There are a few: andromo, ibuildapp, appsbar... I've made one for android smartphones. It's only for my students and contains scales to practise. I've record the scales with a virtual piano in my tablet. Then I've converted the archive into mp3. Then created the app and put the sound archives and built the app. Very easy and useful for students that don't know anything about playing piano. When I put the app in Google Play (the market for android devices) I'll share with you to see more clearly the example. I can tell you that the app is working and students have now in their smarphones.
An actual case: you are a teacher and your students are singing in a concert. Sitting in the audience, you observe them, but there is something wrong and you don't know how warn them. You can't leave the hall, you can't make gestures because they can lose concentration. It is the best time to use an instant messenger service. Don't be afraid to do it, technology is on our service and we must be imaginative enough to find ways to apply in our work. Most of students use any of these services, so if we need correct something, even in the middle of a concert, we can send a message to the dressing room or maybe receive one from them asking us something. But, please, don't forget mute your phone first.
There are a lot of instant messenger services. We just have to choose one of them and get utility according to our needs. Contact with the students, sending archives like scores in pdf, pictures or music in mp3. Maybe organize our schedule faster and efficiently. For example, in a messenger service we can add our students a group and inform them about changes like cancellations. This will save us to call students one by one and maybe the class is filled effortlessly.
I would like encourage you to use one of these services, practice to find more utilities and share your experiences here.
We can find a lot of reasons for use technologies. For example, I began
because the easiness you can carry out any task. The first tool I used, was the
mail, years ago. It was very comfortable organize schedule, communicate with
students, with colleagues, sending archives.
All of us know technologies exist, but we don’t know how use them in our
daily work. Today we can find a lot of sites about technologies and learning.
But vocal teaching is a very specific work with its own needs. We have to collaborate
in the creation of a professional net to develop the adaptation of these tools
to the peculiarities of our work, a network of ideas and help to understand how
the tools work by articles, tutorials…
When did the new technologies begin? Well, It’s difficult specify. I’ve
read a lot about this point but finally all fonts sent to Guttemberg and the
press. Too much far in the time. Maybe the beginning was the creation of the
first computer or maybe the creation of the first personal computer? Or the
creation of internet?
Do not care about the creation or the first tool. Take advantage of them
and feel free to share your ideas with the rest of our pedagogical community.
